Strengthening and deepening my roots – reading the Bible in 90 days

Welcome to this neglected little blog of mine! Having given it two false starts, I thought it might come in handy as a place to record a few reflections on a marathon I’m about to undertake – a reading marathon – the Bible in 90 days! I was inspired to give it a try after reading this blog post by Oh Amanda.

Why am I doing it? Perhaps this marathon is more aptly described as a spiritual one. I believe the Bible is God’s word to us; a primary way God has chosen to reveal himself to us and explain (at least in part) his plans and purposes. It is the story of God and his people, and I am humbled to know I am part of this story too.

I always hear God’s voice speaking powerfully to my spirit when I read his word, yet I don’t read it nearly enough. So, this is an attempt to kick-start more regular reading, to gain a valuable look at ‘the big picture’ of the biblical story, and to discover all the bits I’ve never actually read (mostly hiding away in long books by the prophets). It is a way to strengthen and deepen my roots – that is, my relationship with the living God.

Will I be able to read through it so quickly? I’m not sure! It has taken a lot of work over the last few weeks to get myself into a position to allocate the time – I need to be a lot more efficient and organised with my life and probably most importantly, more focussed. But I’m up for the challenge and I believe it will be the best investment I can make. If you’re at all intrigued about this venture, please ask questions in the comments (below). If you want to join me, please let me know! You can find the reading plan here. The Bible in 90 Days (NIV) is also available in hard copy and for Kindle, if that takes your fancy (it tells you exactly where to stop and start as you go along).

Will I be able to regularly write about my thoughts and insights? Who knows? If you happen to read my previous few posts, you’ll notice that I commented on six chapters of a ten chapter book… and then vanished for a few years. That may suggest that reading the Bible in 90 days is a little beyond me, but you’ll be pleased to know that I did indeed finish reading Ten Things I Wish Jesus Never Said. I just didn’t get around to writing about the last few chapters. Hopefully I’ll do better this time around, but if I disappear before reaching Revelation, it may well be the blog, not the Bible, that I have abandoned.

Now for a time of prayer in preparation, before I hit the starting line tomorrow.

    • Thanks Amanda! I’d been meaning to pop over to your blog to let you know I’m doing it. Thank you for the inspiration 🙂 I even have a few friends joining me – I love companions! Two days completed and I can see this is going to be an amazing and beneficial experience in so many ways. (And I would never run a real marathon either!)
